A few years ago some friends were sitting around over drinks discussing how they could decide who was the “fastest” Kiter or Windsurfer in the Bay…. and now three years later their race has grown into a world class showcase of modern watersports know as the “Bucerias Classic”  The Bay Of Banderas sets the stage and mother nature comes thru with almost perfect conditions for each and every event, bringing together over 200 participants all sharing one common passion – the Ocean!

This year Pacific Paddle Surf threw down the SUP party which proved to be a perfect fit for this water sports display packed into two great days of entertainment and top level sportsmanship and competition. The paddle surf division nicknamed the “Battle of Bucerias” for its proximity to the 5 de Mayo, was a great opportunity for local athletes to compete and introduce some new faces to the local SUP scene.

The SUP relay was the highlight of Saturdays festivities for the spectators and participants alike, 14 eager teams competed for the top spot and the grand prize of a brand new Laird SUP board donated by Surftech Mexico for the most “Charismatic” team. The Sayulita SUP contingent had thier game faces on pulling in the first three podium finishes at the final lap. Teams from Punta Mita, Guadalajara, Valle de Bravo, Salamanca, Mexico, Bucerias and Puerto Vallarta went head to head as camaraderie and team work made some lasting impressions and everyone involved had heaps of fun. -  it was for many the highlight of the weekend.

“The best part of this race was that it introduced SUP to so many people, there were some in the race that had never stood on an SUP before, and everyone was having a blast” said Adam Finer of Pacific Paddle Surf whom provided boards for 10 of the 14 teams.

"Los Tiburones" de la Cocina de Jorge winning a new SUP donated by Surftech

The teams had to have at least on girl, and each team mate had to do one lap around a 400m course, a lot of team work was needed to pull it of smoothly. The most charismatic team of the day was without a doubt the “Tiburones” de la Cocina de Jorge, and the judges agreed as they took home a brand new Laird Hamilton SUP & paddle donated by Surftech Mexico. Congratulations to the crew from Salamanca!!

The Elite race proved to be exiting for the spectators and grueling for the participants as they charged four times around a 1 km course with a 50 meter beach sprint in between laps. The Sayulita presence was felt again, but Pacific Paddle Surf’s Adam Finer was on their heels.

The wind came up late and the windsurfers were blasting thru the slalom course with a tight battle between Diego Martinez, Rene Dami, and Alberto Martinez which held thru the entire weekend ending in a near draw for the Overall Award.

A challenging two days of kite racing with strategy playing a large part, some challenging winds, and a little swimming – course racing has never been more exiting! The Kites could not fend off the windsurfers in the upwind leg of the “wind vs kite”  but in the spirit of competition, it was a grand finale to a great event that we look forward to next year!! Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!

Congratulations to Pacific Paddle Surf’s own  Veronica Nava Finer for her victory last weekend at the 2nd Annual Punta Sayulita Classic. In fine form 4 months after having a baby, Vero was paddling against some tough competition in the “Elite” and 2.2km races.

Vero had this to say…

“The fun race was great because everyone joined the race and it was full of friends, that was the best part for me, some people were serious and some were having fun, there were kids and some people riding tandem, it was great seeing all the happy faces around me! I had a good start, i was pushed out front and i was trying to catch Jonothan Smart so i was paddling hard trying to catch him. I never looked back!”

“I want to thank Punta Sayulita for having such a word class event right here in Nayarit! It is a great venue and we look forward to this event in the future. The sponsors donated fantastic prizes too! The signature trophies of the event are absolutely gorgeous and i am so happy to have one on my wall! ”

Way to go Vero!!

Producer/Director Mathieu Charest from Cinemat Productions Montreal came to Puerto Vallarta to produce his latest music video for the talented singer Marco Calliari.

Finer Films/ Pacific Paddle Surf played a key role in ensuring everything went smoothly for the french crew.  The shoot called for one entire day shooting on the open ocean with no land in sight, sunrise to sunset…and another in the Jungle. The Red Mysterium was used and its low light capabilities were stunning!  The technical expertise and water shooting savy of  Pacific Paddle Surf brought the new wide body Starboard Avanti’s to the set, allowing precise maneuverability of  the camera and picture boat and provided quick and critical assistance. Especially when the boat sank…..!

So if you don’t have MTV…check out the video right here!!

It was our pleasure to hang out with Monica & Kimberle from Seattle on their mid winter Paddle Vacation! They were great paddlers – fun to hang out with, and are hopefully coming back soon! we wanted to share this letter from Monica… so here it is…thanks!!

Adam,

Thanks again for such an amazing experience in Puerto Vallarta this week! I’m still pretty stoked about catching a few waves in Sayulita — I really wanted to try that, but I honestly wasn’t expecting to be able to do it so quickly. Your instruction made a huge difference! It was strange seeing snow on the ground when I got home last night…paddling season is a long way off up here :( And I realized, too, that even though paddling in the summer up here will be great, there really aren’t any waves to catch in Seattle, and I think I’m totally hooked on catching waves now! I guess another vacation will have to be in the works soon :) I’ll be daydreaming about paddling for a long while, that’s for sure!
Please tell Veronica, Jerri and Fred thank you, too — you all were so friendly and fun to hang around with. It felt more like making friends than taking lessons this week — you guys are terrific!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Monica

The Pacific Paddle Surf crew left Bucerias 9am Tuesday morning with 3 newcomers for an Intro to Paddle Surf lesson – conducted daily at 9am on the beach in Bucerias.. Well this was a special morning as the group blazed thru the ocean awareness & ground school, and charged out the the open sea….

Moving  towards the La Cruz Marina, we started to notice several dolphins playing around a large stationary “Hump” in the water,  every few minutes the hump let out a huge breath of air in a mountainous fountain.. Could it be a the Monolithic Humpback Whale..?!The same amazing beast that we have been watching for the last few months throwing its massive 16 meter body out of the ocean?? The crew took a bearing and moved towards the mass..The thought of encountering one of these acrobats of the ocean sitting still was very mysterious..??? was it giving birth??.. why was it just sitting still basking in the sun?? It was as we got closer we realized it was indeed a mighty Humpback Whale of about 40 tones!!  Not only was there a massive 16 meter Humpback whale floating on the surface, but a 2 months old baby as well! incredible! We kept our distance and circumnavigated the massive Cetaceans.

The Whales were totally tranquil, apparently resting from the previous days festivities…

We stuck around until we could stare no longer from lack of fluids and sun stroke, only to be bid farewell by a huge fin flapping on the surface of the ocean as if to says “Caio”!! incredible.. every day on the bay is such a magical experience!

So come and paddle with us, We will provide the equipment & training and the Ocean will provide all the entertainment.. so far this week we have been absorbed into a school of Dolphins, and now the Whale encounter!!! wow whats Next!! Don’t miss out!

Pacific Paddle Surf is holding its first annual EXPO/DEMO day this Saturday February 19th from 10am to 4pm in Bucerias, on the beach in front of Pacific Paddle Surf headquarters on Calle ABASOLO, which is 4 blocks down from DeCamaron Hotel. Come and check out our new line of  Paddle Boards, Windsurfers, and Outrigger Canoes!  and learn about our spring and summer activities!!

See you there!
